APPLICATION INFORMATION

Prospective graduate students apply for admission through the University of Utah Apply Yourself (AY) online application system. 

Suggested Minimum Requirements for Application

  • A completed master's degree with a GPA of at least 3.00.
  • Experience in full-time leadership role in higher education for 5 years at the Associate Director level or higher.

Application Fee 

Check with Admissions Office on fees.  You can pay your fee online through the AY system. 

PLEASE NOTE:  We DO NOT require a GRE test score.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

    >>  Use the University of Utah Apply Yourself (AY) online application system (click on link to start application). 

IMPORTANT:  Under the Program Information section on the AY application, first choose your program of interest, which is Educational Ldrship & Policy EDD.

You will need to upload the following to the Apply Yourself Application:

>>  Resume or Vita that includes academic and professional information and demonstrates career development (i.e. leadership roles, professional activities, and volunteer involvement).

>>  Statement of Purpose - Please limit your statement to 500 words or less.

The Ed.D. program is designed to provide a strong academic and theoretical foundation combined with application to practice. Students are encouraged to identify their own interests and expertise to build a program, which will directly impact the development of leadership capacity in their specific area of interest.  The Educational Leadership and Policy department is committed to the development of leadership in social justice with an emphasis on the importance of access and equity for all student populations. This commitment guides the foundation of our work and is reflected throughout the program of study.

Describe the following in your statement of purpose:

·   the reason for seeking this degree and your career aspirations upon completing an Ed.D.;

·   how you see the ELP Ed.D. program fitting into your academic and professional trajectory;

·   a concise statement of your research interests and your personal motivation in educational leadership;

·   how you envision your fit within the faculty and the department.

>>  Writing Sample - Essay – Using the statement and questions below, submit an essay that responds to the topic. 
Please limit your response to 1000 words.

The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy’s Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration Degree Program is designed to support the development of educational leaders with a commitment to social justice and equity.  With this statement in mind, describe a significant professional accomplishment that required strategic thinking, relationship building, and perseverance related to social justice and/or equity.  Define what made this a source of accomplishment and describe what challenges you had to overcome to achieve the goal(s).  What values, interests, and issues represented in this accomplishment motivate you to pursue advanced study in educational leadership?

>>  Letters of Recommendation - Three recommendations are required as part of the ELP application process.  These letters should be written by:

o   A faculty from whom you have previously taken a class.  This letter will address your skills and abilities to navigate the academic rigor of doctoral education.

o   Current/prior direct supervisor who will address the applicant’s future potential for leadership in higher education.

o   An individual who will speak to the applicant’s potential to lead social change in higher education.  This letter is written by someone impacted by a change this individual led (staff, faculty, student, community member, etc.).

Letters will be submitted through the AY application website.

>>  Letter of Support from the Institution

This letter will acknowledge support of your participation in the Ed.D. Degree from your home institution.  It will address elements such as release time for courses and applied experiences, access to data for course and practicum projects, and resource support for professional development.  Your immediate supervisor or VP should provide this letter of support. ADMISSIONS INTERVIEW

Selected applicants will be invited to interview with faculty members of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy as part of the final admission process.

This interview will provide an opportunity to present your portfolio on equity projects, social justice activities, inclusion work and other leadership endeavors that communicate your fit for the Higher Education Ed.D. Program.

Applicants are responsible to ensure that all application materials are provided on or prior to the application deadline.  Applications that are incomplete at the application deadline will not be considered.
